Since starting the podcast, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the number of permanent developers who’ve contacted me and shown an interest in getting into contracting themselves. Contracting has suited me incredibly well for a wide variety of reasons…not simply because of the juicy day rates.
In this episode, I spent a bit of time chatting with a former colleague and fellow contractor from my time at Booking.com. Lee Mason has spent many years both as a permanent developer and subsequently as a contractor. We spoke about how he got into contracting and some of the mistakes we both made in the process. We went on to speak about what appeals to us about the contracting lifestyle and some of the common misconceptions it carries.
A big focus of the conversation was around how you can grow and gain more experience as a contract developer and how this helps you to negotiate your market rate and push back a bit more against awkward clients with unreasonable demands.
Finally, we wrap up with a chat about how the contracting market is changing both due to IR35 and other external market forces and what Lee’s ‘endgame’ for his contracting career is.
